1964 Olympics Football
Tokyo hosted the 1964 Olympic Games, which included football as one of the sports being competed.
Games were played at five locations in and around Tokyo, The National Stadium, Prince Chichibu Memorial Football Field, Komazawa Stadium, Mitsuzawa Football Field and Omiya Football Field. Fourteen teams took part, Argentina, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Ghana, Hungary, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Romania, Egypt and Yugoslavia. Italy withdrew from the tournament after being accused of harbouring professional players within their Olympics squad. North Korea also withdrew following a dispute with the International Olympics Committee. The teams from Eastern Europe dominated the competition with Hungary coming from behind to defeat Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the Final with the winning goal coming from Tournament top-scorer Ferenc Bene in front of more than 65,000 spectators. East Germany finished third and Romania won the consolation final for the games played in Osaka between the defeated Quarter Finalists.
The official All Events Programme is 28 x A4 pages, but only half a page covers the football. Four individual programmes were produced specifically covering the football matches. Each programme is slightly less than 21 cm x 15 cm. Programme 1 is 30 pages and covers the group games. Programme 2 is 26 pages and covers the Quarter Finals. Programme 3 is 22 pages and covers the semi-finals. Programme 4 is also 22 pages and covers the 3rd/4th place game and the final.
