1964 Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo Olympics - 1964

Japan hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics from 10 to 24 October 1964, the first Olympics to be held in Asia. The 1964 Olympics featured nineteen different sports, encompassing 25 disciplines. There were also two demonstration sports - Baseball and Budo.

As well as an 'All Events Programme' individual programmes were issued for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, for each of the nineteen different sports, and for the two demonstration sports. Further, Aquatics was split into 'Swimming and Diving' and 'Water Polo' with individual programmes issued for each. Similarly Shooting was divided into 'Rifle Shooting' and 'Clay Pigeon Shooting' with an individual programme issued for each. Some sports such as Canoeing and Fencing issued just one programme covering all days. Most sports issued several programmes for the different days - for example 'Swimming & Diving' issued 8 x different programmes, 'Football' issued 4 x different programmes etc. The front covers of the 25 x different styles of programmes are shown below. I only have twelve programmes left to find in total to complete my collection of all of the programmes issued for the 1964 Olympics.

Again different styles of tickets were issued for each of the nineteen different sports, the opening and closing ceremonies, the two demonstration sports and again separate tickets for 'Swimming and Diving', 'Water Polo', 'Rifle Shooting' and 'Clay Pigeon Shooting'. Eight of these are shown below as I have just started to collect them.

Four large official posters were issued for the games as shown below. Also shown at the bottom is the official Olympics report in Japanese from my collection. It consists of a boxed set of two large books. There is also an English language version available.
