The first Kirin Cup (Japan Cup) tournament was held in Japan from 21 to 29 May 1978 and featured Japan, Coventry City (England), Thailand, Borussia MG (Germany), Palmeiras (Brazil), Koln (Germany), South Korea and a Japan League XI. The teams were divided into two groups of four teams, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. Coventry and Borussia MG finished top of Groups A and B respectively. In the semi-finals Borussia MG defeated Koln 2-1, and Palmeiras defeated Coventry 1-0. The final finished 1-1 after extra time and Borussia MG and Palmeiras were declared joint winners.
