The third Kirin Cup (Japan Cup) tournament was held in Japan from 29 May to 3 June 1980 and featured Japan, Middlesbrough (England), Espanol (Spain), China, Argentinos Juniors (Argentina) and Fujita Kogyo (Japan). The teams were divided into two groups of three teams, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. Espanol and Middlesbrough finished top of Groups A and B respectively. In the semi-finals Espanol defeated Japan 4-3 in a penalty kick shoot-out after the game finished 0-0, and Middlesbrough defeated China 3-1. In the final Middlesbrough defeated Espanol 4-3 on penalty kicks after the game ended 1-1 to win the 1980 Kirin Cup.
