 The official 1981 Kirin Cup programme has 34 x A4 pages and is all in Japanese. The programme includes details of the fixtures, and the competing teams together with small photos of each of their players. The programme also has six colour pages with photos of the star players including full page photos of Jan Ceulemans of FC Brugge, Herbert Prohaska of Inter Milan, Peter Eastoe of Everton, and Ron Zhi Hang of China. Finally the programme has three pages covering reports of the three previous Kirin Cup tournaments and a page on the match officials.

The fourth Kirin Cup (Japan Cup) tournament was held in Japan from 31 May to 10 June 1981 and featured Japan, Everton (England), FC Brugge (Belgium), Inter Milan (Italy), China and Mitsubishi (Japan). The teams were again divided into two groups of three teams, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. FC Brugge and Everton finished top of Groups A and B respectively. In the semi-finals Inter Milan defeated Everton 4-1 and FC Brugge defeated Japan 2-0. In the final FC Brugge defeated Inter Milan 2-0 to win the 1981 Kirin Cup.
