The ninth Kirin Cup tournament was held in Japan from 11 to 18 May 1986 and featured Japan, Palmeiras (Brazil), Algeria B and Werder Bremen (Germany). Again all of the teams played each other in a single group, before the top two placed teams played off in a Final. Palmeiras defeated Werder Bremen 4-0, Algeria B 4-2 and Japan 2-1 to top the group, with Werder Bremen in second place. However in the Final Werder Bremen exacted revenge by defeating Palmeiras 4-2 after extra time with goals from Neubarth, Mohlmann, and two from Ordenewitz to win the 1986 Kirin Cup.
