The eleventh Kirin Cup tournament was held in Japan from 29 May to 7 June 1988 and featured Japan, Flamengo (Brazil), China and Bayer Leverkusen (Germany). Again all of the teams played each other in a single group, before the top two placed teams played off in a Final. Bayer Leverkusen defeated China 2-0, Japan 1-0 and drew with Flamengo 1-1 to top the group, with Flamengo in second place. However in the Final Flamengo defeated Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 with a goal from Zico to win the 1988 Kirin Cup.

The official 1988 Kirin Cup programme has 36 x A4 pages and is in Japanese. The programme includes details of the fixtures and the competing teams together with small photos of each of their players. The programme also has full page colour photos of Zico and Leandro from Flamengo and a couple of pages with smaller colour photos of the Bayer Leverkusen players. Finally the programme gives details of previous Kirin Cup tournaments.
