1992 Kirin Cup

Kirin Cup 1992

(Japan, Argentina, Wales)

From 1992 the format of the Kirin Cup was permanently changed to make it a three-team tournament with Japan playing against two other National Teams. The 1992 Kirin Cup featured Japan, Argentina and Wales. In the opening game in Tokyo on 30 May 1992 Argentina defeated Japan 1-0 in front of 60,000 fans with a goal from Gabriel Batistuta. In the second game in Gifu Argentina defeated Wales 1-0 with an 89th minute goal direct from a free kick from Gabriel Batistuta to win the 1992 Kirin Cup. Wales restored some pride in the third game in Matsuyama with a 1-0 victory over Japan with a goal from Brown, although they had Roberts sent off in the second half.

The official 1992 Kirin Cup programme for this tournament has 60 x glossy colour A4 pages and is in Japanese. The programme includes the list of fixtures and details of the competing national teams squads with small photos of each of their players. There are special articles on all three national teams and on their star players (with full page colour photos) including Claudio Caniggia and Gabriel Batistuta of Argentina and Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs of Wales amongst others. Finally there are details of previous Kirin Cup Tournaments.
