The 1996 Kirin Cup featured Japan, Mexico and Yugoslavia. In the opening game in Shimizu on 23 May 1996 Mexico drew 0-0 with Yugoslavia. In the second game in Tokyo on 26 May Japan defeated Yugoslavia 1-0 with a goal from Kazuyoshi Miura. In the final game in Fukuoka on 29 May Japan defeated Mexico 3-2 with goals from Hiroaki Morishima, Kazuyoshi Miura and Naoki Soma to win the 1996 Kirin Cup.
