FIFA Confederations Cup 2001

Japan and South Korea co-hosted the 5th Confederations Cup in 2001, as a form of rehearsal for World Cup 2002, which they were co-hosting the next year. It helped the two organising committees in Japan and South Korea to test certain facilities and practices ahead of the World Cup.

Mexico (defending champions), South Korea (co-host), Japan (Asian Champions & co-host), and five other champions of their continents took part - France, Australia, Brazil, Cameroon and Canada. France and Japan defeated Brazil and Australia respectively in the semi-finals before France went on to defeat Japan 1-0 in the Final with a goal from Patrick Vieira to leave France holders of a third major international honour following their successful campaigns at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Two different Japanese and Korean language programmes were produced for the tournament. The excellent Japanese programme is 60 full colour A4 pages, and apart from the introductions is mostly in Japanese. It covers full details and photos of the competing teams along with further information on star players from each team such as Hidetoshi Nakata (Japan), Anderson (Brazil) and Thierry Henry (France).
