The 2001 Kirin Cup featured Japan, Paraguay and Yugoslavia. In the opening game in Tokyo on 28 June 2001 Paraguay defeated Yugoslavia 2-0 with goals from Juan Daniel Caceres and Virgilio Ferreira. In the second game in Sapporo on 1 July Japan defeated Paraguay 2-0 with two goals from Atsushi Yanagisawa. In the final game in Oita on 4 July Japan defeated Yugoslavia 1-0 with a goal from distance from Junichi Inamoto to win the 2001 Kirin Cup.
The official 2001 Kirin Cup programme has 68 x glossy colour A4 pages and is in Japanese. The programme includes the list of fixtures and details of the competing Japan team squads with small photos of each of their players. The Yugoslavia and Paraguay squads are give without pen pictures. There are special articles on all three national teams and on their star players (with full page colour photos) including Junichi Inamoto of Japan, Jose Luis Chilavert of Paraguay and Dragan Stojkovic of Yugoslavia amongst others.
